Conference Program

A stage for open exchange between academics and industrial researchers of all origins and ages.

Dear participants of the 7th Glycan Forum – it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Berlin. As for the previous editions, the 7th Glycan Forum is a reflection of key developments in the field in the past year. In late 2012 a report from the US National Academy of Sciences entitled “Transforming Glycoscience – A Roadmap for the Future” was presented to the US congress and marked a major milestone in the definition of the field and its positioning within the scientific community. This document reflects the immense wave enthusiasm the glycosciences are seeing world-wide.
It should come as no surprise that this years focus topic „Glycomics in Asia“ is a consequence of the rapidly increasing fundamental research prowess of this continent. Asia is not just a rapidly developing future market, it is a place that is at the cutting edge of science, particularly in the glycosciences. The traditionally strong Japanese glycoscientists are joined by top-level chemists and glycobiologists across the continent. The Glycan Forum echoes these facts by giving a stage to world-class scientists that happen to reside in Asia.
In addition to global reach, the education of the next generation of scientists is key to fuel a thriving field. In this spirit the European Young Investigator Workshop (EYIW) “Deciphering the Glycome – from synthesis to applications” has been held in conjunction with the Glycan Forum.
As it in years past it is our goal to create a stage for open exchange between academics and industrial researchers of all origins and ages to advance the glycosciences in all its facets en route from the basic sciences to products in the global economy.
Prof. Dr. Peter Seeberger
